Overview

EcHy3D is a distributed lateral ecohydrological transport model operating on a set of spatial cells connected by neighborhood relations. Each cell represents a landscape unit with layered soil, optional surface water storage, and optional river/channel storage. The model computes lateral redistribution of water and dissolved solutes between cells and between internal compartments.

The following hydrological domains are represented:

  • Soil / groundwater domain: lateral flow is driven by hydraulic head gradients between neighboring cells. Conductivity is based on saturated hydraulic conductivity of groundwater layers or a prescribed groundwater conductivity.
  • Surface water domain: lateral routing of runoff is driven by topographic gradients between cells.
  • River domain: cells may contain a river/channel storage. River water can exchange with neighboring river cells, infiltrate into soil, receive surface and soil inflows, and discharge to the model outlet.

The model currently transports the following dissolved substances:

  • sulfate (SO4)
  • nitrate (NO3)
  • ammonium (NH4)
  • dissolved organic nitrogen (DON)
  • dissolved organic carbon (DOC)

Solute transport is coupled to water movement using mobile-pool fractions. Subsurface transport acts on the groundwater part of the soil profile, surface transport acts on the surface water store, and river transport acts on the river store.
